When exploring the history of Midnight Club, many fans wonder why Rockstar's arcade street racing franchise was abandoned after 2008. In an interview with Kiwi Talkz on Insider Gaming, former Rockstar designer Kris Roberts shed light on the internal dynamics that led to the end of the racing series.
Internal Conflict and the GTA Shadow
Roberts, who worked on multiple titles including Red Dead Redemption before leaving in 2010, pointed to missed deadlines and non-trivial conflict between Rockstar New York and the San Diego studio. The primary issue, however, was the overwhelming dominance of Grand Theft Auto. The New York office viewed the racing team as secondary because they were not producing GTA, creating a challenging environment despite world-class development work.
The Shift Toward Massive Hits
Although a new Midnight Club was in development when Roberts left, the project was ultimately canceled. This decision aligned with the strategic direction of parent company Take-Two Interactive. CEO Strauss Zelnick has emphasized that the company focuses exclusively on top-ten hits rather than acting as a long tail publisher. In an environment prioritizing massive blockbusters above all else, solid and well-received titles like Midnight Club were left behind.
